I am off to have a hearing test today. A whole hour of my life finding how bad my hearing is. I feel like Tony Hancock in that famous speech when he had to give a pint of blood and he said 'a pint, a pint, that's nearly a whole armful' strange what goes through your head isn't it. Anyway, I find I hear a few words in a different way horse for course for instance, so I have to translate ;) Lillie is the worst when she fires words out with her back to me.

Talking of Lillie, she left for Portugal last night. She and my daughter stayed in an airport hotel because the plane took off at three and Karen wasn't having her sleep in the airport. She went suitably loaded for a camping trip.
She is a true camper, bought herself two Swiss army knives last week, though we keep telling her about knives on the street but apparently she can carry one at least. She has left some room in her knapsack because she has to bring back a tent. It will be a great adventure for her though.

Hope Lillie has a wonderful Jamboree with no floods or heat waves or hurricanes this year!
ReplyDeleteI think the weather there is very hot Sue but Lillie is a practical girl and will sort it;)
DeleteMy partner needed hearing aids before he died. The tv was too loud. Stop mumbling. Can you speak up. I didn't really need them but my former employer's insurance company decided I did, and pays, ongoing. It future proofs me for when I will struggle to hear.
ReplyDeleteDid I read the word 'tent'? Ghastly. Good luck to them. Portugal is wonderful.
Well it is not as bad as I thought, I could probably go on without aids for a bit longer Andrew. If you go privately, the cost is enormous, so I will have to bite the bullet there sadly.
Deletehope the camping goes ok..... not been to portugal for a while..... we do like mdeira to be honest, but it's quite different to portugal, portugal! Hope the hearing test goes alright...... i should probably get one too but it probably needs to go at the end of a long health related to-do list!!
ReplyDeleteThe test went better than expected and he explained everything thoroughly. Decent aids cost thousands though, and not hearing people might be a blessing in disguise;)
Deletei think playing the "selective hearing" card for some time before jumping on the hearing aid wagon could hold some sway, indeed!!!
DeleteI've had hearing aids for many years and just got new ones a little over a year ago. Mine were expensive but there are other ones that aren't as costly. One thing that is nice about my new ones is that they have blue tooth capability so I can hear my phone conversations right through my hearing aids. Much easier to understand the speakers. It's never perfect hearing again but it is much better and I can set them louder if I am in a busy setting. Good luck with your testing.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that Lillie can carry a knife on the plane. I don't think they allow that here... Wishing her safe travels!
Well I am sure the knife would be in the large knapsack in the hold Ellen. Swiss knife is a bit misleading, you can also clean out a horses hoof, open a bottle of wine, a great number of things are attached.
ReplyDeleteI was listening to the radio on the way home from work yesterday and a researcher was talking about proactive things that we could do to delay the onset of 45% of dementia cases. One of the things to do was to deal with hearing loss in a timely manner! Of course, of the things that he said, my mother had only failed in one regard, so I have a feeling that hers might be one of the 55% that are mainly hereditary (given her mother had the same)
ReplyDeleteIt is all so complicated on the net and everywhere else with their ideas about all the myriad illness we can finally succumb to. Actually thinking about it it would seem that having to use your brain more in interpreting what is being said would help keep your brain working anyway. Dementia is a particularly hard one to overcome but hereditary genes does play a part.
