24th February 2026

As today is a migraine day, I shall have my own photography day

This is Byland Abbey of the Cistercian order.  Hidden in the country and difficult to find.  We asked a village postman and he gave directions and then raced off after us in the post van because he thought we might go to the old Byland Abbey - sweet. Chosen because of the blue sky, it was incredibly hot and the Rose window's half curve against the sky.  Why two Bylands?
'The Bells, the bells' Wiki will give you the answer.

Probably a favourite flower the foxglove.  I always wanted a pale yellow one, but I think this is a verdant plant ready to turn pink.

The beck at Murk Mire a favourite walk

A rabbit hole impossible to go down when you are  a rather plump spaniel.  But the badger and fox hole had possibilities and several times I have sat on the ground hauling Lucy's plump behind out.

An abundant crab apple tree and below, the bank where the rabbits lived.  The badger lived at the beginning of the bank, (badgers eat rabbit) and the fox hole was over by the river.  Predators had the perfect pantry!

  1. Some happy memories there I am sure. I didn't realize that badgers ate rabbits, so yes, a nearby larder for badger and fox.

  2. I hope your migraine abates soon.
Poor rabbits needed to find another home. Our Jack Russells used to go underground but never got lost, though they always came out uniformly brown.

  3. Hope your migraine is gone already. One of my sons gave up dairy and says he hasn't had a migraine since. I've never tried that myself, though.

  4. Well, I never knew a badger would eat a rabbit! I guess pretty much everything eats rabbits.

I love the Byland Abbey picture. Looks like an interesting place to visit. Surely that is the "old" abbey?

When I saw your foxglove I first thought, "Wow, those foxgloves are early!" But then I realized these are not new pictures. Ha!

  5. Migraines are a torment. I endured about 12 years of them as a regular occurrence; apparently in old age I've outgrown them. I hope yours has passed with the day.
I have a strain of foxgloves that in bud appear to be a creamy yellow, but they open to pale pink. I've tried a number of varieties from seed that don't thrive. I have to be content with several shades of rose/pink that reseed and revive.

  6. I will answer everyone in one go. Steve the answer as to the two Byland Abbeys is in this Wiki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byland_Abbey. It was the bells that made them move further away from the Abbey of Rievaulx. I have written about badgers in the later blog up top, they live with us quite unseen until you go out looking for them. As for my headache, I reckon it has to do with the weather changing once more. We are linked to the universe in more ways than one.
