A Good Solstice for Everyone
Though I have no religion, the changing patterns of the year speak to me. We are on the threshold of returning with the sun back to spring and then to summer. The photo above is up on the downs round Bath, the birds, golden plovers. They had been sleeping on the ground, and as Moss walked quietly beside me I inched up closer to the birds on my knees. trying to keep a low profile. Of course they flew off. So remember;
In the depth of winter
I finally learned
That within me there lay
an invincible summer.
Camus
We should always hope for a better world but we should also remember the beauty of the natural world around us, it is there for the taking.
I've never celebrated the Solstice.
ReplyDeleteToday is my youngest grandson's 1st birthday. I wonder what his life will be like!?! There have been so many changes in my life, I can't imagine what will happen during his. I hope it is happy and healthy and peaceful.
Well a very Happy Birthday to your small grandson Ellen. We can't make the future for our children we just have to trust them to make it better.
DeleteSolstice Blessings Thelma. Altho it has been so dreich today it’s hard to know when the sun rose or set. Never mind, today I’ve made more mince pies, bought a shoulder of hogget lamb from the farmer at Petworth farmers market as well as a big lump of Montgomery cheddar (£17.00 worth!), a stalk of sprouts from Mereworth organic farm, Scilly Isles narcissi from the florist and Saturday’s Guardian for Christmas TV listings. Pleasingly I spent more or less what I earned from working in the secondhand bookshop this morning (if you can call it working!). Hope you’re keeping warm and dry. Sarah x
ReplyDeleteWell I've been to the market this afternoon and bought cheese, spent more than you Sarah:). There was a great queue. The narcissi are a tad early, the rest is just Xmas spending and then it will be all over and we shall be left with a fridge full of food that needs eating up. Thank you for the Solstice blessings, it is surprising how the year turns round.
DeleteOooh Sarah - Hoggett. It's years since we last had that - a neighbour would butch er his own and we would cut it into joints - that was a skill well learned! SO tasty.
ReplyDeleteI have been out sweeping up leaves as apparently it was an old tradition to use your broom and sweep out the darkness. It was good to have fresh air, although it was getting pretty dimpsey. In a months' time it will be light till nearly 5 p.m. Hooray! Some sunshine would not go amiss either - I'm getting fed up with endless dove grey days with no light.
Well I only swept the kitchen floor Jennie. The two from London arrive tomorrow and then Tom on Xmas Eve. Well we have had some rain and a lot of wind, I think also there is supposed to be snow on the way which will please Lillie. She is on the scouts trust board here, seems young but still. Anyway after a great baking session for the Beavers's party, I think her duties are done.
ReplyDeleteFunny. I look at it the tiniest bit differently. Nature is there for the giving. I always come back from time spent outside feeling strengthened and encouraged.
ReplyDeleteWe are probably both right Debby. Nature though when you separate it from you the person, acts on its own powers and doesn't need our input into it.
