Good bye Autumn, and welcome brown, slithery muddy leaves. Constant rain is already turning their golden tones to the brown of decay. Look on the bright side the reservoirs are filling up.
Family are back and forth, Lillie back to London and Andrew also went up to London yesterday for business. Tonight my daughter and Andrew are going to see Lucien play in his band in Manchester, I hope it is a success, think their band is doing a tour.
Someone on F/B put up Riveaulx Abbey and Byland Abbey up, on a misty morning, well I shall put up my sunny photos of these two abbeys.

The BBC has been our background to life since it first began in 1922. Did you believe everything it told you? of course not. Two heads have offered up their resignations, one always has to have heads on the chopping block don't you know;) A certain justice has taken place. The BBC had to wend its way through an equally disturbing matter of the Palestine/Israel war, it may or may not have got it right because of political pressure. But if you want to be informed just read around, or at least listen around, there are plenty of podcasts out there strumming the "truth" and facts don't alter, though death figures might.
What came out of those abbeys so needlessly destroyed in their times? Firstly beauty, a dedication to craftmanship. A community spirit, the monks also looked after the poor. Calm oases, a belief system that marked their lives.
Definitely not the mayhem we see today in our society. The thing is there is no mayhem in most towns, mostly we see community spirit. It is only the media trying to drum up reading figures that blow up every scandal out of proportion.
Who can resist the logical quote from Shelley.
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away
The volume of output from the BBC is extraordinary and of a very high standard. It is inevitable that there will be at times, errors of judgement and mistakes. I am keen listener to the BBC Witness podcasts but only those that interest me, most of them.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most hackneyed phrases coming from media is in times of troubles or disaster is that, 'We have a great community, and we will pull through this together and help our neighbours', like it is something special for one town, or one race or one country. No, that happens all over the world and I doubt a country could be named where it doesn't happen.
Sorry, grumpy mood tonight.
If only Trump's favourite TV channel - "Fox News" was held up for the same kind of scrutiny as the BBC have to negotiate. I saw the original Panorama programme and I really cannot see what all the fuss is about. The short extracts from Trump's speech on January 6th 2021 which were spliced together during editing fairly captured the core of what he was saying to the riotous mob in front of him. On news programmes, politicians' speeches are always shortened through editing to convey the essence of what was delivered which is where a certain level of interpretation will occur.
ReplyDeleteThe BBC needs to pull up its collective socks and stop being so self-absorbed. Its news coverage is poor and narrowly focused. We deserve more from a corporation which declares itself to be without fear or favour.
ReplyDeleteLike most other mainstream news outlets, BBC News should stick to reporting facts, and not pushing their opinions instead. And it would help if those were verified facts, not the imaginings of some highly opinionated and dubious sources. And let us have the full spectrum of facts, not a very selective subset chosen to push someone's agenda.
ReplyDeleteImpartiality requires that the egos and opinions of the news editors take a back seat to an even-handed reporting. Leave the opinions and interpretation to other programmes clearly identified as such.
I don't think the BBC should apologize as he did say those things and he did incite the violence on Jan. 6th.
ReplyDeleteWell everyone's made valid points and I am not here to argue. The BBC have several radio sites, whether it be sports, comedy, drama, music or news. My most go to is RU3, Radio Unwind which at least keeps the levels down. Perhaps rather than short half hour news each morning, lunchtime and evening, there should be a political channel as well. I am not sure I would want a radical reshuffle of the BBC, for so many people it has been the background of speech and music we hear each day.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't even bear to investigate this noisy clanging. Thelma I watched this insurrection unfold. I have listened to his words that day many times. Over and over, I have heard his cult say that he said nothing that incited the violence. "The media has twisted his words". Repeatedly, the blame is laid at the feet of a corrupt media. Lawsuit after lawsuit to silence and distract.
ReplyDeleteBut, not matter how it is spliced and diced, there is no doubt at all that this was a man who attempted to overturn the results of an election...and that, Thelma, is exactly what these lawsuits are all about. He exaggerates everyone else's wrong doings in an effort to eclipse his own. I would like to see the BBC stand up to this. In my country, the media simply aligns with power. This is frightening to see. I watched a 60 Min interview with CBS two weeks ago. He lied, over and over and over again. There was no fact checking.
I think Debby most people find it unbelievable that he is allowed to lie with impunity and not be pulled up sharp by the interviewers. I am not sure that the BBC will fight him, either way it is throwing our money away after a stupid man who basically should be sitting on the front porch being nursed by his family. And that is a kindness...
DeleteDrove past Riveaulx Abbey recently but didn't stop - my loss it seems .
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Mark. Both these abbeys are close and both of the Cistercian order. Rievaulx Abbey is situated in a beautiful little valley with a hamlet of old cottages scattered around. Both abbeys are excellent examples of monastic life.
