Sunday - Castle Howard

Lillie came home on Friday night for the Easter break.  She went scouting yesterday with others for suitable camp sites for the scouts for the May holidays.  A list included Lancashire (it's just over the border in Tod), West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.

I really miss North Yorkshire it is so countrified, so different to this end of Yorkshire.  Small villages. and I had read yesterday, in useless news, that the Howardian Hills is the place to be.

I suppose Castle Howard gives N. Yorks more credence than it should have.  We never visited the interior, I get tired of looking at over dressed castles, and this one is not a defensive one  more an extravagant flight of fancy.  Having been so mealy mouthed over Castle Howard, here is a brilliant tour of the house and its furnishings, sculptures and just gorgeousness of the whole place.  But so much easier to see from the comfort of one's computer chair.  So enjoy a masterpiece of rich spending.

  1. Your doll house is so fancy!!
Castle Howard - I can't imagine why anyone would need a castle home like that! I guess it creates jobs for local people? Were they generous with the locals?

    1. It was a Georgian townhouse to reflect Bath houses, I gave it away though Ellen. There was a very good nursery at the castle, Lucy my spaniel loved it, they kept all the toys on the bottom shelf in the shop and she would always choose something and then get a treat at the cash desk.

  2. Castle Howard has long been on our list of places to visit but I haven't made it there yet. Isn't that where they filmed the TV version of "Brideshead Revisited"?

    1. The answer is yes and also Bridgeton. It is a magnificent pile and well worth a visit if you are staying in York.

  3. Yes, I was going to mention what Steve said.
While it isn't quite in York, the gardens of Chatsworth House are wonderful. We never saw inside the house, but I'm sure it was as magnificent as others we have seen. The gardens were enough in themselves.

  4. These houses are part of the tourist trap and of course the historic past so beloved in television drama. Now I see everyone in videos doing the 'Bridgeton walk/dance'. Such large houses and gardens need a lot of money for upkeep Andrew.

    1. Yes, and whoever now owns Chatsworth doesn't have enough money to restore the failed garden and fountain water system.

  5. I haven't been to a 'stately home' for a very long time. They do require a great deal of money to maintain and I wonder if they could be put to better use.

  6. I am not sure they could, breaking them down into apartments for example Janice would not help with all the objects gathered over time. The National Trust helps in some way. They are white elephants these large properties we don't want to get rid of them and yet upkeep is so costly.
