I have deleted some of the things I wrote yesterday, everything changes so quickly nowadays. So to families, our royal one has everyone debating the 'book'. Jeremy Clarkson has been sacked from Amazon for his wretched misogynist comments on Meghan. So his hopes of generating money from his farm and restaurant, may have just gone up the creek but I am sure he will be back in some other disguise.
I think Tina Brown's article in the Observer clearly lays out for once and all the nonsense of the wretched publication of 'Spare' here. Her sharply worded article is good. I mean why is everyone so predicated on an idiot Prince who should have just kept quiet, well there is one thing predictable an idiot public have bought the book and registered the cash till in Harry's bank.
So who is the other family, that is the Marten family, aristocrats who have lost their daughter Constance along the last eight years, a family fallout, or the fact that she has just had a baby, presumably by the man who is accompanying her, Mark Gordon, a man who has been in prison in America for 20 years for raping a woman when he was 14 years old. Should his 'sin' haunt him for the rest of his life? also he is black, which doesn't help.
Constance's father made a heartfelt appeal to his daughter, it is really the families business, why are there 200 police people dedicated to the search I wonder? All I do know it is click bait and you can bet your bottom dollar in a couple of years it will make a nice fictional story on some TV channel.
I will leave this last paragraph in, just as important but doesn't have all the salacious force of the above.
What was more important news is the effect the Taliban are having in Afghanistan, people need aid as always, the girls banned from education. This downgrading of females to a secondary role is the most horrific act, misogyny does not describe it. A senseless religious cult dictates the dominance of women by men.
I find it amazing how many people - including women - support Jeremy Clarkson. I like the use of the word 'wretched' in the above. I used to use it a lot. Describing Clarkson as a 'wretch' is perfect.
ReplyDeleteHe is a particular type of man that probably also raises the hackles of many women. Makes money out of being controversial. It is as if he has punched a ball and it has come back and it has hit him in the face.
DeleteI think maybe Harry regrets the book now - but as you say - as the money rolls into the bank he will grit his teeth and bear it. As for Jereemy Clarkson - he writes in the Sunday Times and I always read him because he writes in a slick but readable manner. Not any more. What he said was disgraceful. There is one similarity in both cases albeit from opposite sides of the fence. You may think what you like but once written down it becomes public knowledge and the world knows all about it. And - sadly - in both cases the reason is the same - money.
ReplyDeleteThat book was like 'all the bad things that have happened in my life'. A confessional of sorts. It has set him and his family on another course through life which he will come to regret sadly. It would be interesting to know the reason why? Was it vengeful? or did the 'American way of life' spilling everything to a therapist bring it about. And another question, why is everyone navel-gazing?
ReplyDeleteI have seen several bloggers' opinions on the book Spare and they are often opposite reactions to it. Usually, I find that those bloggers in England resent the book and its author but some bloggers in the US feel sorry for him.
ReplyDeleteI think of the many other important issues in the world today - like you mention in your last paragraph - and I wonder how people get worked up about silly things and ignore the really horrible things.
I think the resentment stems from a protective attitude towards the Royal family, but the saying goes you should never wash your dirty linen in public, and I think that is very apt. Problems arises when people take sides. perhaps in America they read the story differently Ellen.
ReplyDeleteMegan and Harry's philanthropies could grow through hard work and clear thinking, like Bill Gates, for instance. And that's including latitude for some of Gates' bone headed decisions.
ReplyDeleteI had heard that Gates has made some mistakes along the way Joanne. I think Meghan and Harry in making decisions about 'how to appear to the world' have really messed it up. If you do good works you don't shout about it, humility is not in their makeup.
DeletePatti Davis is the daughter of Ronald Reagan, and she wrote a book airing her family's dirty laundry in public. She wrote an open letter to Harry. The one thing that caught my attention was a line that said something to the effect of 'try to see your life through a wider lens. The story is bigger than your picture of it.'
ReplyDeleteIf you are interested, you can read the whole letter. https://www.today.com/popculture/books/patti-davis-shares-advice-prince-harry-memoir-rcna64867
The situation in Afghanistan (and elsewhere) is heartbreaking from a woman's perspective.
I watched the news last night. We heard the latest on Brian Kohberger. We heard the comments of the parents of the 6 year old who shot his teacher. About Jeremy Sands missing. We heard very little that actually was anything I'd call "World News".
Yes we have become used to seeing the individual story in the news Debby. But why do we not what to face the horrors of world news. People starving to death in many parts of the world makes us uncomfortable and the war in Ukraine could well slip involuntarily into a world war. Patti Davies is right of course, we only have partial truth when we write of families, we never see it from the other side of the frame.
DeleteI always bristle at the well-trodden notion that "people are entitled to believe what they want". Of course the Taliban's attitude to girls and women shows the absurdity and wrongness of such a belief.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with belief is that it exists whether in the Christian faith or Neo-druid faith. The tenets are written by a person/persons and are used selfishly. What has happened with the Taliban and all religious fanaticism is an obsession with forcing it on others in a form that is terrible to women, and we all know that has been going on through the centuries. I think hopefully the women of Afghanistan will eventually overcome this.
DeleteSurely the goldfish bowl effect in which royalty must live makes for difficult private lives. I won't be reading Harry's book--I think he and Meghan have over-played the sob stories. As a way of making money the tell-all, poor me/us mode will eventually wear out and leave them with little respect from the public, and one would think, little self respect as well.
ReplyDeleteTwo cultures came together I think, neither of the participants being particularly intelligent and they played to the crowd. Unfortunately the crowd is more cross than adoring Sharon. Sad really.
