Melodramatic madams and watery worlds

Sainsbury's car park.  The store is up on a hill, but the main roads into Whitby are all flooded one way or the other.

Lucy was ill yesterday, I think from eating fish pie which had some chopped onion in.  She made a terrible fuss, turning round and round, trying to get into corners, whining.  Had she eaten something poisonous we did not know, so took her to the vet and she had a couple of injections to calm her and pain relief.  This morning it looks like she is on the mend, toyed with her biscuits and has been drinking.  What a kerfuffle!  And expense!
And watery worlds, well it is, news that Whitby was cut off by flash floods, and was only approachable from Ruswarp by four wheeled drive, something I read this morning.  It reminded me of a radio play I had listened to long ago about the rising waters around a small farm, lapping ever nearer to the farmhouse, till the day arrived when they had to take off on a raft they had constructed and leave the farm and its animals to their fate.
That everyone is sick of continual rain is in no doubt, we jump on those few days when the sun comes out with blessed relief.  The weather is so warm as well, one day of frost does not a winter make.
Our road has been 'up' almost continuously, the mains pipe must have burst from one of the farms, and even now there is a lorry with a crane across the road inspecting, presumably some water works gone astray.

  1. Very distressing when pets are ill [usually messy as well] and inevitably very expensive to visit the vet. The good thing is that Lucy is recovering. I think some dogs don't handle human food well, others can eat anything that doesn't eat them first.
What a dreary wet winter in so many places.

    1. She is still not eating well but her tail is wagging a lot of the time. Most of my dogs have eaten our food without any trouble, I think she just frightened herself. Well at least you have had some sun and frost Sharon, everywhere I walk just squelchs underfoot.....

  2. Well they do say 'sick as a dog' Thelma don't they? Glad to hear she is getting better though.
It is such depressing weather isn't it? The fields opposite our farm are flooded again this morning, and the beck through the village is to the top of its banks. It flows past my cottage there but luckily my cottage stands back from the lane so is not likely to flood.

    1. Well you are lucky with your cottage, I was shocked that the police were advising not to try to get into Whitby yesterday because the main roads were so flooded, it is the drains that are going now with the rain, the flooding from the rivers is just another misery. Roll on summer.

  3. Ahhh poor Lucy - glad to hear she's on the mend now - any visit to the vets can be expensive - we have to buy heart tablets for our Jack Russell each month ......my hubby has the same sharp intake of breathe every time we go in to the vets to pick them up! (but she's worth it) xx

  4. I'm sure she is worth it, perhaps we too readily take the NHS for granted to provide free care, when it comes to paying for animals, a 'sharp intake of breath' is indeed one's response ;)
