Chelmer in flood

When the river overflows.  These photos appeared on my F/B page this morning.  8 years ago is the date.  The camera or the atmosphere was very clear and it captures one of those moody days we all experience.  I have lost many of my photos from this period due to them being on an old computer, so was delighted by their appearance.

The old mill, now split up into several houses, was not far from our house in Chelmsford, yes it is the Chelmer Navigational River, a rather lovely ecosystem that has seemed to stay clear of urbanisation and heavy farming.  We often walked this part of the river, and if we continued over the water meadows would arrive at the pub, whose name escapes me at the moment.

Dead Cats
Political!!! Sorry but it struck a note this morning. Johnson on how to run the country....

“The key point, says my Australian friend, is that everyone will shout ‘Jeez, mate, there’s a dead cat on the table!’; in other words they will be talking about the dead cat, the thing you want them to talk about, and they will not be talking about the issue that has been causing you so much grief.”

    1. No definitely dead cat Debby. It refers to Johnson's scurrilous mention of Starmer and Jimmy Savile's name the other week. Starmer was mobbed last night by ignorant people chanting. Funnily enough everyone says it was a 'Trumpian' move by our esteemed prime minister to draw the attention away from all his mistakes over Party Gate. Our politics are as complicated as yours ;)

  2. How lovely to get those flood pictures back.

Johnson may be a circus clown but he is also a cunning bastard. Throwing out the line about Jimmy Savile was as vindictive as it was deliberate. As for "I Will Survive", I pray that that is untrue. A better song for him would be "Good Riddance" by Green Day.

    1. You can see how flat Essex is Nial compared to the rushing flood rivers round here. It is almost a peaceful sinking of the land under water. You are right about Johnson, but surely his time is running out when he throws such terrible fireworks into the conversation.

  3. Chelmsford isn't recognised often enough as a really very soggy place, eh? I used to walk to work across the flood plains by the river there... Except for when I couldn't!
All the new buildings can't be helping. I left the area a bit before you and very seldom return but even if I visited weekly I'd still be surprised by new developments I think.
    Fox & Raven?

    1. Fox and Raven yes of course with the great magnolia tree in the centre of the garden, thank you. A lot of the land round that area is left undeveloped of course because of its watery nature. I suspect the fields have always been water meadows.

    1. Well if they are anywhere near Chelmer village, go to the Fox and Raven. When you come out of the old Georgian farmhouse that it was, take the little lane down to the right and it will take you past the above mill and down to the river.

  7. I'm not quite sure what you meant Tabor, but his mental health leaves a lot to be desired.
