Inclusive or Exclusion?  Guardian article

"Lord Pannick, a British barrister and a crossbencher in the House of Lords whose opinion was commissioned by several members of the club, said that the pronoun ‘he’ is interchangeable with ‘she’ in the law, meaning the club’s current rules already allow women to join."

That made me chuckle this morning.  There has been some action over the male only Garrick club in London, and everyone has been getting their knickers in a twist over it.  Several outstanding females have been proposed to join the club, including Dame Mary Beard.  Though she has said should the male members of the club rule otherwise she will accept it and not legally challenge.

There is an argument for women joining the club, though I am sure its austere interior and subdued talk will not go well with the ladies tinkling talk, but that is just a small matter.  There does seem an unfair advantage when the 'great and good' males of the country exclude women from the top jobs that are obviously discussed and commented on within its austere walls.

I am listening to Nick Drake at the moment to banish from my head the Abba songs.  These earworms are such an annoyance and I shall be glad when the BBC stops reminding me of them.

  1. I tried seizing the day earlier, but once again it has slipped through my grasp.

    1. It always does John. There is a protest UK band called 'Seize the Day'.
some of the songs might ignite fury though;)

  2. Those trails on BBC radio drive me nuts. I love Nick Drake's music. Honest! At the funeral of my river-dwelling friend, his daughter played 'River Man' - the first time I ever heard it.

    1. He was a sad romantic figure that only got to fame because he died too young Tom. Yet his music is good.

  3. The quote published by BeeCycling is partly true, but as humans we should all meet each other's eyes, unless apparently if you are on the London Tube.
Men only clubs, and perhaps women only clubs are problematic but it is such a good point that such places are where 'things' are discussed and perhaps decided. For proper political representation, and such clubs are hardly representative of the population, women should be able to be full members.
Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight. Won't somebody help me chase the shadows away.

  4. Yes, well apparently I believe you should not stare a dog down, or it will attack you Andrew. I haven't been on a Tube for years so don't know about that. As for the Garrick, it is probably full of 'dryasdust' men, women would not be interested in it anyway but they should have the right to go in there.
I've been listening to other music all morning, Abba has faded away ;)

  6. Hope we don't have to have men in the WI, they do enough interrupting and saying silly things at the Over 60's group!

Colin loved Abba music - I'm not such a fan - it all sounds the same to me

  7. Well Sue it works both ways I suppose, though there isn't many men on 'Woman's Hour' In defence of Abba. though their music was similar over the many songs sung, they had a good harmony.

  9. Personally I would not wish to join or enter the Garrick Club as I know it will be filled with pompous old Tories burping , farting and talking bollix. I would prefer to be in The Women's Institute but men are barred from this noble organisation. Was Jerusalem builded here?

    1. Well to join the W.I. Neil, you must be able to do craft work, make jam and sew fine art, not forgetting flower arrangements. Jerusalem was definitely not builded in the Garrick Club it is probably a rest home for all those judges you speak of.

  10. Had to smile at the "Do not seize the day" piece. Going back to bed (with a good book) sounds a safe alternative!

    1. I always manage to fall asleep reading in bed but I loved the idea of the 'day' having a character of its own Jennie.

  12. Let them in and the next thing will be that they'll want to join the committee, and in next to no time there will be flowers and pretty cushions everywhere.
Nick and Gabrielle Drake are yet more of my wife's ridiculously notable but distant relatives. They have common Metcalf ancestors and two generations of that family married into the (Henry Francis) Lockwood /Day families.

  13. have you no illustrious ancestors Tasker? Someone said (another meme) that Adam and Eve had belly buttons - think on that. So as we can supposedly all trace our lineage back to this couple, who beget them? See below.
As for women joining male clubs and altering the decor doubt if the men would notice.
Answer: a lot of artists did not think that one out!

  14. Waterloo gave me a good laugh! I have no illustrious ancestors. I do have some notorious ones.

  15. Well you can't pick and choose those who have gone before Debby. Just realised 'Waterloo' is an Abba song.
