19th May

I am just beginning to wonder if the North/South divide is actually happening.  Talking to my daughter yesterday she mentioned that when she was working in Hebden Bridge, Jeremy Corbyn came for a meeting in the Town Hall a couple of days ago and attracted a large cheering crowd. So there we have the media and here I mean the BBC, who after all are our main source of news, saying nothing about this.  Not fake news just manipulation by the London based media to play down what really happens.  Does Theresa May attract large crowds, nope.  The same happened in Leeds large crowds turned out for Corbyn to cheer him on.
The mantra one hears is that Theresa May will take us through a 'hard' brexit, she is the only person to see us through safely - don't believe.  Like others I wonder at Corbyn's strong brand of socialism, the talk of nationalising some of our utilities, and to be honest I am almost in favour of such a strong political move.
Politics are being shaken up all over the world, not counting Trump who was the most idiotic of choices for a president of America, what comes out is that people want change, the French threw out 'Le Pen' not taking a step too far to the right.  If more young people engaged with the politics of their countries we would perhaps get a different world, maybe not what we older people wanted but still the answer lies in our geriatic aging world of coming into closer contact with the younger, probably more selfish up and coming leaders like the French president Macron.

  1. What is needed is lower voices from the wealthy corporations and more attention and calmer talk with constituents.

    1. I think the problem is whether you think there is a big black demon running the show (i.e. the corporations) or whether democracy just hangs on a whistle and a prayer, chopping and changing with the will of the people. Sadly the end result is we never get anywhere, because the whole task is impossible...

  2. I no longer listen to the news and intend to give it a miss until after the election. This may be cowardly but I don't believe any of the politicians. On the day I shall vote because it is my right - who I vote for will maybe not be decided until much nearer the day. Sadly I seem to grow more cynical with age.

    1. Must admit I hate news, especially as it is repeated all day, would much prefer proper discussion. But I am interested in the mechanics of what is happening around me. My grandchildren are solid labourites;). When you come to think about it politics and religion are of a similar nature.

  3. We were talking about this this morning. My hubby and I are fed up with the violent swings from left to right and back again, each party undoing any good the others have done. When 35% can have a majority and "win", it is crackers. We want proportional representation, so like a coalition. It seems to work well enough in Germany. Maybe if all the voters were represented, there would not be so much division. Bev

  4. PR is a good idea, although I believe there are problems in the maths. Came to the conclusion years ago that democracy does not work very well, one side always loses out. Our political system needs a big overhaul, one of which is to provide a proper chamber for debate, not the hee-hawing we find in the House of Commons!

  5. Most of us are horribly embarrassed that Trump is our president. Over 3 million more people voted for Clinton than voted for Trump, but the antiquated Electoral College picked Trump. And we are actually frightened for our form of government because of what he and his cabinet are doing to it. My apologies to the world, sincerely.

    1. You don't have to apologise for him, the whole world seems against him ;)
