Pull up the drawbridge

Cold weather and the covid draws near.  What an upheaval for everyone, jobs on the line, packed hospitals and parts of Yorkshire are fighting back.  Its guns at the OK Corral, drawn and primed between Andy Burnham and the London government.  This part of Yorkshire is  at the second part of the tier, though only 20 miles away the City of York will probably go down to the third tier.

Like tortoises we have to draw into our shells, not mix.  Yesterday I filled the car up with petrol, bought animal food for the birds in the garden.  Then came home and ordered an online delivery from Morrisons - what excitement!  Then the phone started with messages from British Gas.  I have a limited phone plus limited reception as well.  So I struggled through the rest of the morning betwixt computer and phone negotiating a Smart meter, which should be fitted either Saturday or Thursday (smiles maniacally).  The oil man is also coming sometime this week, the manager crows over the phone 'it's very cheap as well'.

But for a moment this early morning, I opened the back door and listened to the owl hooting gently in the trees and thought life is not too bad.

Resolution through this period: wander through history,  William Sharington passed me by yesterday (he is of course long dead) but he reminded me of the rogues and crooks that dance round the court of Parliament, he lived through Henry Vlll times and profited happily.

  1. Drawbridge about to be pulled up here too Thelma, with our total Welsh Lockdown commencing on Friday evening. Before then I have booked another Tip Run and also need to arrange another Charity Shop drop-off, so I need to go Fossick for contents of same!

    1. Jennie I don't envy you downsizing, your house is enormous. Wales seems to be taking a firmer grasp on the lockdown then here in England but it could all be different next week.

  2. Oh dear yes Thelma we seem to be entering another Phase - so it is food stocks replenished, limited contacts made even more limited, heads down and don't switch on the news unless you want to feel suddenly worse than ever. Off to order my local ready meals and book a Tesco slot. Loved your photographs of Avebury yesterday.

    1. Well I had some good news this morning, after all that trouble with British Gas, I find a good refund in my account this morning, so being noticed also brings good results! But yes stock up but without too much stacking of goods that followed the first peak.

  3. Many people are profiting happily right now - mainly the ones who don't need the extra boost this catastrophe has given their finances.

  4. You can't beat history for foretelling the future. Same in the World Wars as well, profiteers and black marketers. Now, the handing out of contracts to their friends by the conservatives. But then... there are good people as well.

  5. The drawbridge is still down here but it does feel like we are slowly being surrounded by places that have had to pull theirs up. I think we will become a island surrounded by a moat of Tier Three - we remain in Tier one.

    1. I think of course those out in the country are not experiencing what the big towns and cities are having to cope with.

  6. Over here, we have the election coming up so soon (I will vote early tomorrow) and I cannot wait until we are through with that. Added to the animosity surrounding that is the rising numbers of COVID and the upset over that. I am masked and careful and just don't understand the anger over doing that. It seems like such a simple way to help keep the numbers down. Our current president just can't stop spewing his hate and disinformation which has made our situation so much worse. Why? I so hope we will be rid of him soon.

    1. Hi Ellen I think we all hope that, he is the most unsavoury character to be leading a country like America. One day we will be past this Covid but people, and there are many similar people here, going on about their 'rights' not to wear a mask are not helping.

  7. Is the "Smart Meter" the brother of the "Smart Motorway"? The Smarts are an untrustworthy family. No wonder Billy had a circus.

    1. Great long term memory forgotten that old circus team. But a meter will tell me how much electricity (and what it costs) I use. Hopefully the man wont be put off by the old wasp nest in the box, I spent an Autumn a couple of years ago shooing wasps away.

    1. The excitement of yesterday was Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, addressing the journalists and then someone coming forward with a phone and a text from the government telling him he would not get the money for spending on the people, he wanted £65 million and was only offered £60 million, which he seems to have refused.
