19th May 2021

A good morning:  Put my spinning wheel and sewing machine on Freegle, and the spinning wheel has already gone.  Took the old antiquarian books to Helmsley, a very pretty little town, wish I was a cat with 9 lives sometimes and I could live in Helmsley for a time.  Took the books to Oxfam, knowing how they love books and Helmsley being very County.  The volunteers were happy with them, and were already delving into the first bags as I collected the rest from the car.  One of the joys of being a volunteer in a charity shop is you never know what you are going to find.

You can find photos in this old blog

Of course what you find when out, not having driven for days, is that life is going on as before.  The motor cyclists are out in their phalanx's of noisy machines.  There were plenty of tourists in Helmsley, the car park full.

I am watching on Iplayer 'Once Upon a time in Iraq'  bitterly sad, and covered from both the American side and the Iraq side.  It gives a picture of what is happening between Israel and Palestine, and the terrible events that happen all round this part of the world.

  1. I shall try and pick that up on iplayer. My son is doing his best to educate me on the area.

    1. Well as I said Pat it is very sad, you can imagine the hate that is felt on either side, war only makes it worse.

  2. "this part of the world..." Let us hope that a similar bloody conflict does not occur between the burghers of Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside. Which side would you be on?

    1. Kirkbymoorside is a down to earth practical little town whereas Helmsley has little boutique shops, where you can buy the latest tweeds and green barbour jackets at a price. More a Waitrose and M&S place, but no supermarkets. The cottages are pretty though.

    2. So am I right in guessing that you would be fighting for the Hemsleys then? Sounds a bit like Hamas.

    3. Well in a fictional drama of where to live, I actually like Kirkbymoorside, shops are familiar and I am at home there, whereas Helmsley has a lot of incomers. Now as to an actual side to fight on, Hamas would not be my choice. But the 'sense of wrong' that some people feel against Israel can only be turned by an acceptance of Palestine's right to exist.

  3. You are doing a good job of clearing out! Glad you are finding new homes for your items. I enjoyed the photos of Helmsley - it certainly is lovely and does look perfect for visitors!
Many of these conflicts are difficult to follow. Both sides always seem to feel justified but where does the fighting ever get them? More death and destruction and civilians usually suffer the most! Can peace be found somehow?

    1. I doubt it Ellen, killing only enrages either side and ferments in the heart of those broken by the death of loved ones. It is also the structural damage that is so hard, a deliberate act to destroy buildings leaves people homeless and on long treks to the nearest refuge camps.

    1. Well it is worth watching, if only for the understanding of what it is really like. Sadly there is no panacea for the emotional turmoil people feel.

  5. I must drive out tomorrow, and dread the bicycles on our narrow roads.

  6. Here in Yorkshire Joanne all the motorbikes, mostly expensive and owned by middle aged men make forays round the countryside, stopping off at pubs for their lunch. Occasionally there are terrible crashes though.
