20th November 2021

I think this  cartoon says it all on the Northern experience, by Matt.....

But don't be greedy, our beloved leader has spoken! There is always going to be people that want everything at once!  As one who saw the destruction of woodlands along the HS2 as a bad thing, I cannot say the stopping of the vandalism  is anything but good but realise a lot of damage has been done already.  Then of course the North needs a decent rail service linking up the towns and cities lets see how this is tackled.

Anthonore Christensen (Danish painter) 1849 - 1926 Forest Lake with Water Lilies in Bloom and Numerous Insects, 1869

To softer places, this painting caught my attention this morning,  romantic, I love the watery theme, wild plants and the exotic white water lily carelessly float together.  Life and energy fueled by the sun, perhaps it would be better to look for the 'numerous insects' that the artist has painted in.

  1. Boris Johnson is a real liability. If they were going to 'level up' with HS2, why didn't they start work in the North and work down South? It is too late for all the woodland and sites of special interest already needlessly destroyed now. Once again, millions - if not billions - of pounds have been given to big business for nothing in return. They spent all the money to electrify the train route between Paddington and Bristol, then asked for more. When they didn't get more they just stopped working. If I asked for more halfway through a job I would be told to eff off. I am sick of this government. They need to eff off themselves.

    1. I think the tory party is coming to the same conclusion about BJ liability as well, we are being governed by a particular set in society who favour their friends over the people. The Owen Paterson affair underlined it.
Clever thought to start from the North, but the cynic would say, as if! Someone said on the radio today, it is like the Berlin Wall, the North is the East side.

  2. At least 5 insects and a hungry frog. Love it. Politics is getting nasty everywhere. WE also need more trains here for better environmental travel.

    1. Yes I only found about 5 insects Tabor and the little frog, my favourite as always was the dragonfly. I think water lilies floating on serene water are magical.

  3. We arrived at Huddersfield railway station on Thursday afternoon to find police swarming everywhere. "Security exercise" one told us when asked. "Lot of you guys about" I said to another in the gents. "Security because of the visit of the Prime Minister" he confided. Amazing what people confide in the gents. Anyway, trains in Yorkshire being what they are, we had to wait nearly an hour for our connection, so I popped into town for some moss killer (I know, but it is pretty bad). I was stopped and questioned by an impressively polite and well-spoken gentleman before I was allowed to leave. The police were swarming everywhere outside the station too, plus a standby emergency ambulance. It might have been cheaper for BJ to take a private jet. Anyway, walking back with a 2.5 litre can of Patio Magic in a carrier bag, it suddenly occurred to me I might be in trouble when I got back to the station. I rehearsed every answer I could think of. Walked straight past all the security into the station and along the platform without being questioned once.

    1. Well I would have been worried with a 2.5 litres of moss killer, goodness knows what you could have done with it!
We have a visitor at the moment who glimpsed by way of the media choking the platform the fact that Starmer arrived at Bradford station a couple of days ago. And as far as my daughter is concerned, the trains have been late every day last week, and were a whole hour late tonight, so we all had to have a takeaway.

  4. The trrouble is Tom (and I suspect Thelma would agree) - when it comes to the time to vote most people seem tothink it best to vote for them.

    1. The only viable alternative was Corbyn for a lot of people, and nobody wanted him.

    2. Two party system of course has enormous disadvantages, especially as Labour is fighting in its own ranks. What we need is the best of all the people in the parties to govern. But think if BJ came out top in proportional representation!! We obviously love the rogue element in the people we put at the top Pat.

  5. Yes - that cartoon sums up the blinked London-centric mindset of both main parties. Personally, I think that the whole HS2 project should have been cancelled a long time ago as hopelessly uneconomic, and the funding out into serious upgrades to the rail network in northern England and the west country. And how about upgrades like making the whole A1 dual carriageway to Berwick....

  6. Well considering the Stonehenge Tunnel fiasco, more money seems to be made from dithering about things than the actual doing of building. Like you I think the environmental damage was bad, especially the bad taste it has left after people's homes were bought up under the compulsory purchase act.
