25th October 2022

The house is still in a state of turmoil, though today is the last day for our plasterer - Paul.  He just has to tie in the shelving in the basement and then my stuff will be moved in eventually.

Matilda caught the last train to London from Leeds last night by the skin of her teeth.  She has to get back to her job and to facing the landlord over the fact that she has managed to break the stove.

Andrew put the shelving together and it looks neat in one of the rooms down in the oubliette of the cellars.  He also tried to clear my computer but it refused to comply so it seems I may have to get another,  He recommends the large screened Dell Inspiron 27, which balances on a stand.  But I shall have to think about it.

Well we have Sunak to look forward to, definitely better looking but what he will bring in his governance, heaven knows.  Apparently Johnson has been having holidays left, right and centre.  I spy in this country a growing resentment of how rich Tories live whilst foisting poverty on others.

We are living literally on that head of a pin, everything is being juggled, and there will be a slow dance back to the EU eventually I hope.

  1. At least he doesn't smirk like that woman did as she gave her resignation speech knowing she would have plenty of money for the future.

    1. She should definitely not get the payout of a year due as a PM for doing hardly anything but ruining the country's finance.

  2. I hope your belongings will stay high and dry down in the cellar.

Sadly, computers have limited lives it seems. Danny recommended the one I currently have (a Lenovo Yoga 510) and it's doing well so far, though I have some sticky keys!

As for politics, one can only hope that such a rich man has some understanding of how the poor suffer and how pensioners struggle so.

  3. We are only putting stuff up on the top two shelves I think, there are four linkages so there should enough room, even for my daughter's stuff, she collects kitchen stuff, the cupboards in the kitchen are bulging. My son recommends Lenovo as well, but Andrew (who is very tall) uses a similar model but you have to be away from the screen which may be a problem.

  4. Thanks for introducing me to a new word Thelma - "oubliette". I guess most French houses had them.

As for Porky Johnson, I would like to share these points with a fellow leftie. Johnson is still the M.P. for Uxbridge. Parliament is in session. So why oh why is it okay for him to travel over to the USA to deliver very lucrative talks and then to holiday in The Caribbean? Shouldn't he have been back in London doing the job he is paid handsomely for and helping out his constituents? I am surprised that this wasn't picked up on by regular political commentators.

    1. Well

When first time I came across 'oubliette' it was Chillon Castle, 'the forgotten rooms', where prisoners were cast into the deep dungeons. Basements or cellars are excellent for storage, unfortunately here they flood from the water flooding down the hillsides but once upon a time they must have been used.
As for Johnson, think he has had three holidays in a row. Even the foolish see the folly of re-electing him thank god. The Guardian picked it up but who can criticise our golden haired boy rushing back in an undignified manner to get elected.

  5. In this country, people seem awfully accepting of a party that votes down every single motion to improve the lot of the ordinary citizen. The same party can vote for exhorbitant funding and tax breaks for big business and and huge pay raises for themselves, assuring people that it will 'trickle down'. After 30 years, people still believe it.

    1. Debby there are lots of muttering in this country that it is a pure 'class war'. But things might change, for instance in Cornwall, once the winter sets in a lot of those twee cottages, having been turned into holiday cottage, leaving towns and villages empty of life and the young unable to buy a house. Poverty and lack of social care and health care is beginning to show up badly. Austerity for the poor and bonuses for the rich.

    2. There is no solution except carrying on. Or carrying a ton, as I first typed,

    3. Yes Joanne, most of what is happening is stirred up by the media, they have nothing better to do!
