Enough, I have just found another character to love, John Thomas Blight, 1835 to 1911 antiquarian and draughtsman, he ended up mad in Bodmin Lunatic Asylum and finished his life there. It sounds a terrible place, but did improve in later years, John Clare the poet comes to mind, where does madness lie I wonder? And why should I be thinking it on this post election day? Two of his drawings he was also interested in the churches of Cornwall and illustrated books for them as well.

We just had an election here in Alberta, and the Conservatives were ousted from their 44 year rule by the New Democratic Party (Socialist). One of the main reasons was that the conservatives formed a break away party called "The Wild Rose Party" which is extreme right wing and appears to believe that the disabled should get less money to live on because God must have made them disabled for a very good reason.
ReplyDeleteIt never occurred to them that by splitting the right-wing vote, socialism could end up with a majority (duh!). I don't think that a single NDP candidate expected to be elected at all. We have been starting to grumble about the conservative's rubber stamping big business to the detriment of the people here, and that added to the election results. The NDP were not so much elected in as the conservatives were elected out.
Hi John, the two party system should be dead by now, but everyone says that proportional representation does not work, yet given the number game in this last election, at least the green party could have got a couple of more seats, sadly so could the UKIP people, a frightening prospect. Perhaps we need a totally different approach and to quote Leopold Kohr, something I am in favour of by the way ;)

I cried on Friday morning Thelma. However, I was expecting it and have NO idea why anyone thought it would be any different. I felt the same way in 1992 amongst colleagues at the Theatre Royal Stratford East who were all convinced Kinnock would win. I didn't dare voice my fears then either!
ReplyDeleteHi Em, the first words to greet me on Friday morning was my son in law's 'absolutely gutted', and that is for all the people he looks after in care, as this government cuts benefits (and I am not saying some benefits should not be cut but that is another argument). We have still to hear where the twelve billion pounds social cuts are to be made. But cheer up nothing is lost forever, we will just have to create our own communities. Don't let the bastards get you down ;)
