This is a photo of my daughter's town Tormorden, situated in the Calder Vale, the river has run rampant once again. Their Victorian houses have basements that regularly flood. She has a pump to get rid of the water but useless when the electricity goes. West Yorkshire has been hit severely, as the rivers over reach their banks. Karen will empty the basement of its contents once more into a skip and the council will take it away. Roads are closed, trains not working in some places, the girls are looking forward to the schools being shut. Always a ray of sunshine in bleak weather!
There was a time when all this water was wrapped up in snow but the warming of the atmosphere has stopped that, though colder weather and snow is predicted later on in the week.
For the first time here, I saw the fields at the back go under water on the other side of the river. The arable land though is protected by a bank. The owl out hunting earlier this morning might find a drowned shrew or two of course.
So we had water at the back and water at the front, this is caused by the drainage pipe into the river being shut by the valve lid, which shuts automatically when the river rises Cars drive through the water unfortunately, and there was even some lads punting down the road..
There is something magnificent in nature when its forces come into play, but then an awful lot of misery comes in on its tail. And I can hardly forget the picture of the lifeboat, tossed like a toy on an angry sea out to rescue some idiotic stupid mug of a person who was surfing.
I just can't imagine the misery caused by a house being flooded again and again.
ReplyDeleteStill a bit windy in Suffolk but a bright Monday morning
Some of the people are in despair Sue, but there is just an awful lot of water in Yorkshire, which comes down from the hills and moors. My daughter doesn't keep much stuff down in her basement, though it has the whole footprint of the house, but there is a well stocked freezer.
ReplyDeleteFlooding must be a horrible thing. I feel really sorry for everyone affected. I was horrified at the picture of the lifeboat. I hope the surfer is thoroughly ashamed.
ReplyDeleteComplete lack of understanding about the sea from the surfer, hopefully he has learnt his lesson.
DeleteMuch the same here Thelma although nothing like as bad as the freak thunder storm which hit Bellerby (my son lives there and it is only a mile fromme)last July. Some of the houses affected then are still being repaired and the folk are not living in them. Luckily yesterday the houses on the side of the beck had time to put up boards and sandbags which did keep the water out of the houses.
ReplyDeleteThat must be a relief, but of course if we are in a climate emergency. Such storms will occur again and again, we need to be ready for them.
DeleteSome very angry Calder Valley people on the regional news saying the environment agency has let them down yet again.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the answer, steep sided valley contains the water, road and railway. Yet one feels that there should be a solution. I can sympathise with the people as they put up with this dreadful happening though.
DeleteThis is scary and I am happy that your are light about it. I hope that the water recedes sooner rather than later. So sorry for everyone's loss.
ReplyDeleteIt is far worse for the people who have their houses flooded with dirty water, some are already taking practical steps, like having concrete floors which can be swept out. There is always a lot of help from the services as well. People are good to each other.
