Tuesday 19th May

Wake up again to more rain, thank goodness.  There is a song on Camelot, singing the praises of rain at night and sunny weather in the day.  Two videos today one of the rose bed and its promise of flowers, and the other continuing the theme of food by Liziqi.  How to prepare a squash in several different ways.  The sheer scale of self-sufficiency in her video is breathtaking and you begin to realise that humanity cannot take this path, she is living out a dream but her videos allows us to explore different ideas. And she is probably packing in a great deal of money but I don't like being cynical! I just love the scenery.

My second video is just me with an ever hungry bantam following, there is a big sign above my head obviously to all the animals - SHE PROVIDES FOOD.  The bantams have given up on corn and now demand cooked potatoes, rice and pasta, so it is just a question of doing extra.  Forgotten toast as well but they still manage to lay eggs.  Lucy is also getting into that mood as well, human food is better than dog food, and she will leave hers until there is no more chance of it coming from above.

There is a ceanothus just by the coke house, which has quadrupled in size over the winter, I love the powder blue of its flower against the dark green of its foliage.  Blue flowers are special in the garden, always wanted the blue poppy but of course it only performs on acid soil.

  1. The bantams sound like that U-boat captain in Dad's Army: "We don't want any nasty old dried up cooked potatoes, rice and pasta, we want nice cooked potatoes, rice and pasta."

    1. They make such a querulous noise as well, sitting on the doorstep always waiting for food.

  2. Bantams are not daft as some people assume. As my mother used to say 'They know which side their bread is buttered' - I used to have then on the farm and given half a chance they would be in the kitchen lookng what was on offer. I always forgave them because they we so adorable.

    1. Yes they are pretty and people always go ooh and aah over them but they can be noisy as well. These two do not have names for the simple reason at some stage they must be moved on.

  3. Great videos! I cannot imagine how that lovely young woman stays so clean while she gardens and cooks! I would be splattered with food and bits for sure! Her food does look gorgeous and delicious, tho! Love the view of your yard - all looks so nicely weeded and neatly edged. Good job!

  4. Yes she certainly knows how to keep clean, I think she is a bit of a cult figure in China but she has a very good relationship with her granny. There are weeds there but I am hoping the perennials are hiding them.

  5. My mother's line when the animals followed her around was to call it 'cupboard love'. Sounds as though in Lucy and your bantam's cases, it is a very specific cupboard love--the top-shelf variety. Only the best.

My dog knows precisely when the cheese drawer in the fridge is opened--no matter how quietly it is done and no matter where he is located. Ping! Instantly, by my knee--waiting for me to cut him a slice of cheddar.

    1. Yes you are right it is 'cupboard' love, and I should be stricter about giving in to them. Loved the story about your dog and cheese, even when they are asleep seem to be on alert.

  6. That first video was too interesting. A whole new culture of cooking.

    1. One of the things I have learnt about the Japanese culture, which also applies to the Chinese, that they use what is around them, even though choice is limited. She is interesting though because she explores old crafts.
